Neurotoxin found in California Fish Kill

The powerful toxin, domoic acid, was found in the stomach of the sardines that washed ashore by the million in California last week.  Domoic acid is a by product of a harmful algae bloom exposure.

Officials first pinned the blame for the fish kill to lack of oxygen, saying the large school of sardines swam into the bay and quickly lowered the amount of oxygen in the water to the point where it couldn’t sustain themselves. This is not wrong, but it doesn’t present the whole story.

It was probably the neurotoxin (which effects their nervous system, including their brains), that drove them into the bay ion the first place. Where they were exposed to the neurotoxin is still a mystery. If we hear more on the subject, we’ll publish it here.

  1. Its quite worrying to hear that neurotoxin’s are responsible for the deaths of sardines and if we were not able to control or stop it then the whole breed of sardines will be vanished for ever. Thanks for posting and sharing this information with us.
