Before he was shot and killed by the police, a Florida man said, “I’m going to die tonight.”
WINTER HAVEN, CBS Miami/Associated Press – A Florida man declared “I’m going out to die tonight” before he fired his gun at police to investigate the sexual harassment call.
According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, a woman called 911 Saturday to report a gunshot was heard when she and her husband went to Winter Haven to collect her 14-year-old daughter. Her husband, 52-year-old Larry Jenkins, also called 911.
Jenkins was accused of participating in sexual acts and exposing the teen to it, according to Al-Sharif.
Jenkins returns home to find the teenagers waiting for him outside. Jenkins was so drunk that she offered her husband the weapon to kill them. Jenkins aimed the gun at Jenkins, who refused to give Jenkins a weapon. “I am preparing to die,” the woman said in a statement to reporters. The young man fled the scene after the woman shot him on the ground.
Winter Haven Police Sgt. Joshua Dentel, along with other officers, found Jenkins smoking a cigarette in the yard. Sergeant Dental Jenkins asked for his hands but refused, saying, “I have a firearm in my pocket.”
“I’m going home tonight,” Jenkins told police. When Jenkins pulled the gun out of his pocket, Sergeant Dentel opened fire several times. Jenkins died despite the intervention of paramedics.
Sgt. Dentel was placed on leave from his department, where he worked for approximately 10 years, due to an investigation opened by the mayor’s office and the attorney general during the investigation.
