CAPE CORAL, FL – A retired Cape Coral police officer has admitted to hitting a woman at a Publix store at 100 W Hancock Bridge Parkway.
According to the report, a 73-year-old man named Gary Chapman sounded a woman’s horn around 12:40 p.m. in a parking lot. The woman, who did not like the horn, showed Chapman her middle finger.
Barbara Reynolds, 64, got out of her car and drove to the pharmacy inside the store. Chapman, following the woman, began swearing at the woman in the pharmacy. The woman responded by shouting and raising her hand to Chapman.
In his testimony to the police, Chapman said he did not like to raise a woman’s hand, so she punched him.
Chapman refused the police’s request to wear handcuffs, and grabbed his wife’s arm. Chapman did not stop, though both his wife and the police were called to stop his behavior. According to the police, Chapman was frustrated that he could not speak to his wife. The cops who wanted to arrest Chapman threw him to the ground.
Since Chapman is a retired police officer, he was exempted under the Florida FSS Act. However, he did not provide information about where he will retire.
Chapman was released on bail at 2:10 p.m. Friday. Barbara Reynolds has stated that she will file a complaint against Chapman.
